Maternity Session at 6th & River

One of the best parts about what I do is getting to experiment with new techniques and ideas. So when my childhood friend, Maddie, came to me with some of her own inspiration for a maternity shoot, I was all ears! After figuring out exactly what we wanted to do, we looked for the perfect indoor location - which brought us to 6th and River in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.

I had created a timeline in preparation for this shoot since we only had two hours to use the rented space, and there were many outfits, props and poses I had on the shot list. To say I was a little nervous is an understatement. Not to mention I also had a specific shot in mind that I was completely terrified for - the drone shot.

I was there early to set up - some ideas I had in mind included an air mattress with blankets, pillows and sheets, a plain white backdrop (that I looked like a fool setting up myself) and a clothes line corner to hang onesies. Once Maddie & Jon arrived, they dressed into their comfy outfits and we began with the mattress scene.

I don't really know if I can explain the excitement a photographer feels when the lighting hits just right in a picture-perfect scene. It was generally a cloudy day and I was nervous the lighting wouldn't be enough. Let's just say I knew immediately after snapping these that they were pure gold. 🤩

We did some more poses this way, then decided to swap the pillows, with the direction of the mattress now facing the windows. And out came the drone!

Okay, so to be fair, up until this point of owning the drone, I have only flown it with the assistance of my boyfriend. So I kind of new what I was doing, but I'd be lying if I said I'm a pro. And on top of that, I was so nervous to fly inside the building because I've only ever flown outside. But this was all a risk I was willing to take!

After a couple silly rookie mistakes, I got the drone in position, at the tallest point of the ceiling, as far away from the rafters as possible. We positioned the mattress under the safest point of the drone, which also happened to line up perfectly with the sunshine that was suddenly beaming through the windows. The wind of the drone was strong, blowing the sheets, blankets, Maddie's hair. It almost looked like it was on purpose! And, well, I think the results speak for themselves:

We took Jon out of the shot to do some solos of Maddie:

Umm yes, I am obsessed.

More photos followed with my DSLR, and those didn't disappoint either.

Onto the casual outfits!

This was definitely one of the outfits I was most excited for because there's just nothing like the simple blue jeans and white shirt look.

There's also something about a motion shot that will always have my heart ❤️

Black and whites too, of course 🤍

This photo shoot was one of my favorites so far because it was so out of the ordinary for me. As much as I love shooting in nature, surrounded by water and trees and breathing in fresh air, it's always good to test your skills in different settings - it's the only way to learn and grow, in anything that you do. Here's to new growth, new ideas and timeless photographs...I love what I do 🤍
